Free & Reduced Van Gogh Museum Tickets

Under-18s, Museumkaart and ICOM holders, Iamsterdam City Card holders, and one companion per disabled visitor — they all enter free. Here's exactly who qualifies, what to bring, and how to book the right ticket type.

The Van Gogh Museum has a generous policy for under-18s and a few discount categories beyond. Unlike some Italian and French museums it does not run free-entry days for the general public, but the eligibility list is broader than most visitors realise. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related information.

Who qualifies

Who enters free

    • Under-18s: Free for everyone, every day. ID may be requested at the entrance.
    • Museumkaart holders: Free with a valid card and a timed-entry slot — book the slot, then scan your card on arrival.
    • ICOM, ICOMOS and CIMAM members: Free with a valid professional card.
    • Companion of a disabled visitor: One person, free of charge — added automatically when you book the disabled-visitor ticket.
    • Friends of the museum (Vrienden): Free unlimited entry as part of the membership.
    • Iamsterdam City Card holders: Free with a timed slot booked on the official site.

Who gets a discount

The Van Gogh Museum does not offer a general student discount. Some temporary exhibitions in the Kurokawa wing have a reduced student rate — check the exhibition page when booking.

How to claim a free or reduced ticket

Under-18s: book a free timed-entry ticket online — it's in the same flow as the paying tickets, you just choose €0 for the child or teen. Bring an ID document with date of birth on the day.

Museumkaart, ICOM, Iamsterdam: book a free timed slot on the official site, then scan your card at the entrance turnstile. The card is your ticket — the museum uses card data, not the booking confirmation, to count entry.

Companion of a disabled visitor: book the disabled visitor's ticket first; the companion ticket is added automatically at no extra charge during checkout.

Bring proof: ID with date of birth for under-18s, the relevant card or pass for everyone else. Staff at the entrance check randomly — having proof on you avoids any awkward conversations.

Is there an EU citizens' free day?
No. Unlike some Italian and French national museums, the Van Gogh Museum does not run general free-entry days.
Do students get a discount?
Generally no. Some temporary exhibitions offer a small student discount — see the exhibition page when booking.
Is the Iamsterdam City Card accepted?
Yes — it includes free entry. You still need to book a time slot on the official site.
